Cholesterol is an organic lipoprotein or lipid molecule which is biosynthesised by all animal cells cholesterol and triglycerides are important fats (lipids) in the blood. It is an essential component of cell membranes, brain and nerve
cells and bile, which helps the body to absorb fats and fat-soluble vitamins. Body uses cholesterol to make vitamin D and various hormones, such as estrogen, testosterone and cortisol(1).

The body obtains cholesterol through 2 methods: via the liver, which produces about 75% of cholesterol and through food, which accounts for 25%. Cholesterol comes in several forms, notably “good” and “bad” cholesterol. High levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, the “bad” cholesterol are associated with an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes(2).

The body requires some cholesterol to function but increased levels of cholesterol can lead to cholesterol deposits within the walls of the arteries that eventually form “atherosclerotic plaques.” These plaques grow over time and can break open into the artery and trigger the formation of a blood clot. The sudden blockage of an artery by the blood clot prevents oxygen from arriving at the heart muscle or brain, causing heart attacks or strokes(2).

Soy bean oil helps in lowering cholesterol levels in people with high cholesterol. It has sterols which used to lower total cholesterol and “bad” LDL cholesterol without affecting “good” HDL(4).
